Aleshin looking to extend lead in BrnoCurrent Formula Renault 3.5 championship leader Mikhail Aleshin is aiming to extend his lead in the drivers' standings this weekend with another strong outing in round four of the season in Brno, Czech Republic. His rookie team mate Jake Rosenzweig is also aiming to move up to the podium having shown good pace in Monaco and clinched a pole position in Spa-Francorchamps.
Aleshin has claimed a podium at every event so far this season, including a race win in Motorland and Spa-Francorchamps and a second place in Monaco last month. The Brno circuit, located in south eastern Czech Republic is a new venue for World Series by Renault. Predominantly used as a motorcycle track, the 3.3 mile long Brno circuit will be a new experience for the majority of the FR3.5 drivers, but Aleshin will be one driver with previous experience of the track. The Russian racer competed at Brno last season in FIA Formula 2 and finished second in his first race on the track. Speaking about his return to Brno, Aleshin said, "I've been to Brno before, we raced there in F2 last year. It's actually a really good track; it's quite challenging and there are lots of gradient changes which make it interesting. I'm expecting to get the maximum result, we have to keep pushing and keep getting good points." Team mate Rosenzweig meanwhile will be hoping to continue the form which saw him claim pole position and lead race two at Spa-Francorchamps last month, before a drive-through penalty took away any changes of a podium finish. The American racer will make his first visit to the Brno circuit this weekend. Rosenzweig added, "I'm looking forward to this weekend, its always good to race on a new track. Not only will it be a new race track for me, it will be a new country, as I've never been to the Czech Republic before! Based on my experience on a simulator, it looks like quite an undulating, bumpy circuit. Mikhail has raced there before, which should help us with a set-up. We just need to keep working on closing the gap and making progress." Racing Director Trevor Carlin added, "This will be the first time the World Series team have visited Brno, so Mikhail's previous experience there will be very useful. The team have had a very strong start to the season; Mikhail has been on the pace at every event this year and Jake is making great steps forward in every session. It will be important to get to grips with the circuit quickly this weekend and give the drivers a fast car from the outset. I think it's going to be more competitive than ever this weekend."
