Aleshin takes front row start in HungaryMikhail Aleshin will make a front row start for Carlin this afternoon in race one at the Hungaroring on the outskirts of Budapest. The current Formula Renault 3.5 championship leader put in a strong performance in a hot and humid qualifying session this morning to qualify second for round ten of the season. Team mate Jake Rosenzweig will start 15th.
Following a comprehensive testing programme yesterday, both Carlin drivers felt positive ahead of this morning's 30 minute session. A red flag period just five minutes into qualifying disrupted proceedings in the opening stages, but the drivers had clear running for the remainder of the session. With only 10 minutes of the session gone, the battle lines had already been set, with Aleshin P2 to his main championship rival Daniel Ricciardo. At the half way point, the majority of the field pitted for new tyres. With 10 minutes remaining of the session, both Aleshin and Rosenzweig made their way back on track. Having waited longer in the pits than most drivers, Aleshin had dropped to seventh on the timing screens, but his first flying lap on new rubber put him back up to P2. Rosenzweig meanwhile had jumped from 18th to 15th. Few drivers managed to improve their times in the final minutes, and at the chequered flag, Aleshin was second, with Rosenzweig 15th. Speaking about his qualifying performance, Aleshin said, "The car feels good, we couldn't quite match the pace for pole but we did all we could. I am starting on the dirty side of the grid which will make it slightly harder, but it is still possible to make a good start. I think it could be a really good race this afternoon, certainly an interesting one." Race one will take place at 13.04 local time this afternoon.
