Pons Racing Drivers Forced To Retire In Race 1 In Brno

The Pons Racing Team was unable to score any points in the first race of Round 4 of the World Series by Renault 2010 taking place in the Czech circuit of Brno. For the second consecutive race, drivers Federico Leo and Daniel Zampieri were forced to retire from the race when they were some distance from the points.

The day did not get off to a good start for the Italian Pons Racing drivers. In the morning qualification session, both drivers experienced some handling problems with the car when they fitted new tyres and their pace was some way off the lead drivers. Zampieri qualified in a lowly 19th place while Leo finished up three places behind in 22nd.

Once the race got underway, both drivers made a solid start. However, Zampieri son realised that his pace was not sufficient and decided to enter the pits early on to make adjustments to the ca's settings. The modifications did not make any significant changes to the car's handling and the Young driver who is enrolled in the Ferrari Drivers Academy, retired on lap 12. Leo also came into the pits to make adjustments to his car and it appeared that the car was handling better as he was able to lap in the same times as the lead drivers. However, with three laps of the race remaining, a spin forced him into the gravel and out of the race.

Following the double retirement, Zampieri has dropped down the championship classification to eighth place and Leo to twelfth. Tomorrow the team will try and squeeze more performance out of its cars during the morning qualification session to have a better chance of scoring points in Race 2 which gets underway at one o'clock.

Daniel Zampieri:

"We had some problems today. I couldnīt get into a good rhythm when we fitted new tyres in qualification and my pace was not so good during the race. We will look at all the data and try and find solutions for tomorrow's race."

Federico Leo:

"I am not at all happy. During the race we tried a few things which seemed to work and I could lap much more comfortably. Let's hope we can improve in qualification and get some points in the race."
