Edoardo Mortara wins in the EifelAir temperature: 19.5 °C Track temperature: 32.9 °C With a dominant victory, his fourth win of the current season, Edoardo Mortara (Signature) strengthened his leading position in the Formula 3 Euro Series. At the Nürburgring sprint circuit, the Italian finished ahead of Laurens Vanthoor (Signature) and Roberto Merhi (Mücke Motorsport). Mortara now has a margin of 22 points over Marco Wittmann (Signature), who ended up fifth in the race. After the ninth of 18 races, Mortara is now the unofficial 'halftime-champion'.
Only at the start, Mortara briefly trailed Laurens Vanthoor, who had a better getaway from second place on the grid. However, coming out of the first corner, Mortara already overtook the Belgian again and drove a safe victory home. Laurens Vanthoor was delighted with his best season result and his second podium finish of the season, after already having been third at Valencia. After 22 laps, António Félix da Costa (Motopark Academy) was the best-placed rookie in seventh place overall, just ahead of Jim Pla (ART Grand Prix). The two returnees Mika Mäki (Motopark Academy) and Christopher Zanella (Motopark Academy) failed to score points in 13th and 10th place respectively. Edoardo Mortara (Signature): "The first second, my start was still quite good, but then my rear wheels spun and Laurens went past. Fortunately, he then didn't defend his position at all cost when I attacked him in the first corner." Laurens Vanthoor (Signature): "Edoardo is my team-mate and he is battling for the title, so of course, it is clear that I don't take full risk when he is attacking me. Moreover, I braked too early and thus gave him the chance to attack. After a rather difficult start of the season, I am now also happy with my second place." Roberto Merhi (Mücke Motorsport): "Finally, I scored my maiden podium finish on a Saturday. I have the impression that we are getting closer and closer to the front runners. Today, I had to defend my third place against Alexander Sims. But at this track, that is not too big a problem when you don't make any mistakes."
