Following the two thrilling Formula 3 Euro Series season kick-off races held two weeks ago at Le Castellet, France, in the support programme of the Le Mans Series, the planet's most competitive young-gun series now returns to its usual environment: the DTM support programme. The experienced Formula 3 driver Edoardo Mortara (Signature) travels to the 4.574-kilometre Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg as championship leader and holds a three-point lead over Alexander Sims (ART Grand Prix) and Marco Wittmann (Signature) who are tied for second place.
In Southern France, the three leading drivers, Mortara, Sims and Wittmann, secured all the podium positions, but now, other drivers are determined to also make it to the podium. One of these drivers is Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) who impressed in the official pre-season tests and caused a stir by securing the pole position at Le Castellet. The Spanish rookie would love to give Prema their third consecutive win in a season's first Euro Series appearance at Hockenheim, thus following the footsteps of Renger van der Zande and Stefano Colletti who did so in 2008 and 2009 respectively. While Carlos Muñoz (Mücke Motorsport) who dominated the pre-season tests but had to cope with a lot of bad luck in France now also wants to make it back to the very top.
At Hockenheim, the Formula 3 Euro Series drivers who are going to contest the entire season will be joined by four guest competitors: Esteban Gutierrez (ART Grand Prix), Jimmy Eriksson (Motopark Academy), Luís Sá Silva (China Sonangol - Motopark) and Sandro Zeller (Jo Zeller Racing).
Marco Wittmann (Signature): "I made it to the podium in both rounds of the season kick-off at Le Castellet. Now I want to make the next step and celebrate my maiden Formula 3 Euro Series win. I'm happy that we are back in the DTM support programme following our appearance within the framework of the Le Mans Series. The atmosphere in the DTM environment is better, the events attract bigger crowds and there are more off-track duties to be executed for us Formula 3 drivers."
