Maiden pole position for Marco Wittmann

  Air temperature: 20.8 °C
Track temperature: 31.5 °C

Joy for Marco Wittmann (Signature, 1:33.021 minutes): at the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, the German secured himself the first-ever pole position of his career in Formula 3 Euro Series. The only German driver in the field of the world's toughest junior race series outpaced Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam, 1:33.065 minutes), Edoardo Mortara (Signature, 1:33.167 minutes) and Laurens Vanthoor (Signature, 1:33.332 minutes). Thus, all the Signature-entered Dallara-Volkswagens made it into the first two rows of the starting grid.

Halfway through the session, Marco Wittmann was already on top of the time sheet following a battle with Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix, 1:33.349 minutes). In the closing stages, first Edoardo Mortara and then Daniel Juncadella took over first place. In the final seconds, Wittmann struck back and re-claimed the top position. With the bonus point for first place in qualifying, 20-year old Wittmann, who is in his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series, is now runner-up in the drivers' standings.

Marco Wittmann (Signature): "Qualifying was great. The car was running perfectly and my team has done a great job. This is my maiden pole position in the Formula 3 Euro Series, I can be very happy with that. For tomorrow's race, my goal is clear: when you are starting from pole position, you want to win as well."

Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): "Being up front again is nice. I think that I came pretty close to pole position. In the final sector, I made a slight mistake, but it was still enough for second place. I am also happy to be the best-placed Mercedes-driver. In the race tomorrow, I want to finish on the podium."

Edoardo Mortara (Signature): "For me, qualifying wasn't really great, but the team performance is very good. We are all up front. That shows that the car is quick. Personally, I am a little bit disappointed as my last lap wasn't perfect. I reckon that I could have been on pole otherwise. But third place on the grid is a good position to start from, too."
